Objective : To prepare the student for EE 300 (Thesis)
Requirements :
1. Identify your topic of research
2. Identification of adviser
3. Literature review - minimum of ten pages, minimum citation of one
journal and one book.
4. Five-minute presentation of a project or lecture that you presented
in another graduate course. The date will be agreed upon in class.
5. Twenty-minute presentation of proposal before the EEE Graduate Research
Monitoring Committee. This is usually scheduled around the end of
the semester.
6. Attendance in at least two graduate research talks.
7. Attendance in at least two proposal presentations.
8. Critical scrutiny of proposals, talks and papers.
Content of Thesis Proposal :
Abstract (see A Scrutiny
of the Abstract)
Literature review / background / introduction (assume
that the background of your reader is the least common denominator of the
different disciplines involved in your thesis)
Statement of the Problem (one paragraph)
Proposed Methodology (this is tentative but should reflect
your knowledge / understanding of your problem and this is actually the
first thing that you will do; must be very specific)
Dates to remember :
Week 1 - research topic and identification of the adviser
Week 2 - five-minute presentation (in class)
Week 6 - first draft of the literature review
Week 8 - second draft of literature review
Week 10 - first draft of thesis proposal
Week 12 - second draft of thesis proposal
Week 13 - dry-run of twenty-minute presentation of thesis proposal
Grading system :
Satisfactory
All requirements submitted on time; thesis proposal approved on time
Unsatisfactory Unexcused absence
in any of the class meetings; requirement(s) not satisfied on time

2. Comments on your drafts will be available after one week.
